My SGR Journey from Nairobi to Mombasa: What I Discovered About the Window Seats
For me, the best part of my Mombasa trip started long before I even reached the coast.
There are two kinds of people on the SGR from Nairobi to Mombasa.
Some board, find their seats, put on their headphones, sleep for five hours and wake up just in time to ask, “Are we there yet?”
Then some understand the assignment.
They get the window seat.
They charge their phone.

But you'll miss the best part.
The journey begins in Nairobi, surrounded by the city’s familiar sights.
Then, gradually, the buildings begin to disappear.
The city gives way to open spaces.
The scenery stretches out.
And before you know it, you're watching a completely different side of Kenya from your window.
That's when you start thinking:
Maybe the journey is actually the holiday.
Then Comes the Wildlife Spotting Game
This is where things get competitive.
Someone suddenly looks out the window and says:
“Wait. Was that an animal?”
Everyone looks.
Someone points.
You squint.
You grab your phone.
You zoom in.
And just when you think you've figured out what you're looking at...
It's gone.
Congratulations.
You've just experienced wildlife spotting from a moving train.
The trick is to keep your eyes open and your camera ready.
You never know what might appear in the distance.
And when it does, you have about 3 seconds to capture the perfect picture.

Watch How Kenya Changes
One of the most underrated things about the journey is how dramatically the landscape changes.
You leave behind Nairobi's busy streets and gradually enter wide-open landscapes, rural communities, and stretches of greenery.
The further you travel, the more the scenery begins to feel like a preview of what's waiting for you at the coast.
It's almost as if Kenya is slowly changing the channel.
City.
Countryside.
Wildlife country.
Coastal landscapes.
And eventually...
Mombasa.
Your Camera Roll Is About to Get Busy
There is a moment during the journey when you realise you've taken far too many pictures of the same landscape.
Don't worry.
Everyone does it.
The landscape keeps changing, the light keeps shifting, and suddenly the ordinary-looking scenery outside the window looks surprisingly cinematic.

So, Is the Window Seat Worth It?
Absolutely.
Especially if it's your first SGR journey to the coast.
Because you're not simply travelling from Nairobi to Mombasa.
You're watching Kenya transform right outside your window.
You're seeing landscapes you might otherwise fly over.
You're getting those little unexpected moments.
And you're building anticipation with every kilometre.

Because sleeping through the entire journey might be comfortable...
but you might wake up in Mombasa wondering what you missed.
