Your first international trip is exciting. You’ve booked the flight, started planning outfits, told your friends you’re finally leaving the country, and you’ve probably got a camera roll full of destination inspiration already.

Then reality hits. There’s a passport to check, a visa to figure out, baggage rules to understand, and a whole country’s worth of systems on the other side that don’t necessarily work the way Nairobi does. None of that means international travel is complicated. It means there are details nobody tells you until you’ve already made the mistake once.

Here are ten worth avoiding before you make them yourself.

1. Booking the flight before checking entry requirements — all of them

This is the mistake that turns excitement into panic fastest, and it’s rarely just about the visa. Before you pay for anything, check whether your destination requires a visa for Kenyan passport holders, whether it’s available on arrival, or whether it needs applying for in advance — and don’t stop there. Some countries will also ask for proof of onward or return travel and evidence you have enough funds for the trip, especially if you’re arriving on a one-way ticket. Immigration officers can and do turn people away at the gate for missing this, ticket already paid for.

VIU TIP: Check application requirements, processing times, and passport validity rules together, not one at a time — especially if you’re travelling during a busy season when appointment slots fill up fast.

2. Assuming your passport is automatically travel-ready

Having a passport isn’t the same as having one that meets your destination’s entry requirements. Some countries need a certain amount of validity left on it — six months past your travel dates is the common rule, though it varies — and some want a minimum number of blank pages. Check your expiry date and your destination’s specific requirements before you travel. It takes two minutes. Sorting out a problem at the airport takes considerably longer, and you will not enjoy doing it in front of a queue.

3. Skipping the yellow fever certificate

This one catches a lot of Kenyan travellers off guard specifically, because it’s easy to assume vaccination certificates are someone else’s problem. Kenya is classified as a yellow fever risk country, which means a number of destinations will ask you to show a Yellow Fever International Certificate of Vaccination — the “yellow card” — either to enter or sometimes to return home. Not every destination requires it, but enough do that it’s worth checking before you travel rather than at the departure gate, since it isn’t something you can sort out same-day.

VIU TIP: Get your yellow fever vaccination at least ten days before travel if you need it — the certificate isn’t valid until then.

4. Leaving everything until the last minute

We know the Kenyan way. “I’ll sort it out later.” Until suddenly your flight is tomorrow, you’re hunting for a passport photo at 11 p.m., checking visa requirements at midnight, and wondering whether your suitcase is actually within the airline’s baggage allowance.

International travel rewards early preparation. Give yourself enough time to sort documents, accommodation, airport transfers, insurance, and currency, so the goal is arriving at the airport excited, not running on pure adrenaline.

5. Not checking the baggage allowance

Your suitcase may have travelled halfway across your imagination before it’s even left Nairobi. Airlines have real baggage rules, and they vary by ticket type and route. Check how much checked and cabin baggage your fare actually allows, plus the size and weight limits, before you pack. That extra pair of shoes might feel essential at home. At the airport scale, it can become a genuinely expensive decision.

6. Packing like you’re moving countries

Cold weather? Packed. Hot weather? Packed. Three dinner outfits? Packed. An outfit for the outfit photo? Obviously packed. Overpacking doesn’t just cost you at the airport, it makes the actual trip harder — more to carry, more to track, more to worry about losing. Think about your real itinerary. What are you actually doing, how many days, what’s the weather, will you have access to laundry? Pack for the trip you’re taking, not every trip you might theoretically take while you’re there.

7. Traveling without real insurance — not just any insurance

A lot of first-time travellers either skip insurance entirely or buy the cheapest policy available without checking what it actually covers, and both are gambling with money you don’t have lying around for an emergency abroad. Some destinations don’t just recommend insurance, they require it as part of the visa itself — a Schengen visa application, for instance, needs proof of travel medical insurance covering at least €30,000, valid across every Schengen country, covering emergency treatment, hospitalisation, and getting you home if something goes seriously wrong. Read what your policy actually covers before you assume you’re protected.

VIU TIP: If your destination’s visa has a minimum insurance requirement, buy a policy that clears it comfortably, not exactly — insurance that technically qualifies but pays out reluctantly isn’t insurance you want to be relying on in an emergency room.

8. Forgetting that your Kenyan shilling won’t work everywhere

You don’t want to land somewhere new and realise, mid-taxi-ride, that you haven’t thought about money at all. Before travelling, find out what currency you’ll need and how you’ll access it, and whether your destination widely accepts cards or whether you’ll want some local currency on hand for smaller purchases. And pace yourself — the exchange rate making everything look cheap on day one is not a signal to spend like it’s your last day there, because it isn’t.

9. Planning an itinerary that needs thirty hours in a day

First-international-trip energy is dangerous. You want the landmark, the museum, the mall, the famous restaurant, the day trip, the nightlife, and the hidden gem your TikTok algorithm found at 2 a.m. — all before your body’s even adjusted to the new time zone, which it will fight you on for the first two or three days regardless of how well you planned. Leave breathing room. Travel time, queues, traffic, jet lag, and the unexpected are all part of the actual experience, not obstacles to it. You don’t need to conquer an entire country in one trip. Some of the best memories happen in the gaps between the plans.

10. Trying to figure everything out alone

There’s a certain pride in saying “I’ll plan the whole trip myself,” and yes, you absolutely can. But your first international trip is exactly the kind of trip where a second opinion earns its keep — a visa consultant who does this daily, a travel agent who’s booked the route before, even a well-travelled friend who’s already made the mistakes you’re about to make. All of them save you time, stress, and a few unnecessary surprises. Understanding entry requirements and knowing which questions to ask before you book matters more on a first trip than any packing hack ever will.

Your first international trip doesn’t have to be perfect

You’ll probably make a few small mistakes anyway. You might take the wrong train, forget where you left your hotel key card, order something you can’t pronounce, or walk considerably more than planned. That’s part of travelling, not a failure of it.

The important thing is getting the big things right — your documents, entry requirements, flights, budget, and overall planning. Once those are sorted, you’re free to focus on what you actually travelled for: seeing somewhere new, trying something different, meeting people, taking that photo you’ve had saved for months, and coming home with a story that starts with, “You guys, let me tell you what happened…”
